The city of Fort Collins was first a post for the army but was called "Camp Collins," to honor Lt. Col. William O. Collins, who was the commander of Ohio Cavalry troops who were headquartered at Fort Laramie. During 1864, a devastating flood practically destroyed the first army post. The existing location of the city was picked to be the location of the new military operation. The new post was called Fort Collins. During the year 1867, the fort was decommissioned but a new town still emerged. During the year 1873, the new township of Fort Collins was officially incorporated.
With the opening of the Colorado Agricultural College, it sparked an new achievement milestone six years after that. This will eventually become Colorado State University. Originally founded as the only land grant institution within Colorado, CSU has become a significant part of the city's culture and recreation as well as being the largest employer in the city of Fort Collins.
There is a balanced economy in Fort Collins along with a highly educated workforce. The manufacturing base comprises businesses like Water Pik, Hewlett Packard, Anheuser-Busch and Woodward. The research facilities and resources at CSU have attracted several hi-tech businesses to the region. There are offices for Intel, Avago, LSI, AMD, Pelco and national Semi-Conductor situated in the city of Fort Collins. In addition, agri-tech and clean energy businesses are also part of the economy.
Among the many businesses in the city' manufacturing base, they produce goods such as scientific instruments, aircraft components, industrial chemicals, measuring and collecting instruments, solar technology, communications equipment, bio fuels, Smart Grid technology and turbines.
