The Port within St. Lucie was developed by a subsidiary of the Mackle Co., the General Development Corporation. The company invested more than $50 million during 1958 to help develop some residential properties along the river. The plan was successful and Port St. Lucie was incorporated during the year 1961. From its first phase as a residential bedroom community, Port St. Lucie is now becoming a thriving city in its own right.

The city's location provides a terrific place for outdoor enthusiasts, offering up various public parks and recreational facilities. There is also an abundant amount of surf and sun. The many outdoor activities which are common within the city, consist of: swimming, fishing, canoeing, surfing, sailing, kayaking as well as other water sports. Golf is a local industry, because the city is home to the Professional Golf Association or PGA Learning Center and Historical Center. Tourists and locals could go to the PGA Golf Professional Hall of Fame. A world-class collection of golf periodicals and memorabilia is housed at the Probst Library.

St. Lucie County has a strong and vibrant culture and arts sector, with the A.E. "Bean" Backus Gallery & Museum, that houses paintings and collections by the famous Florida artist. To be able to learn about the county's rich history, go to the St. Lucie County Historical Museum. Both of these museums are located in Fort Pierce.

The Navy UDT-SEAL Museum is the only museum in the world which educates the people about the history of the Navy SEALS as well as their predecessors. The Hallstrom Planetarium is popular with old and young alike. It is located in Fort Pierce on the Indian River Community College campus.

Although lots of Port St. Lucie residents commute to other cities for employment, the city is encouraging the development of a new downtown core. Furthermore, the head office of QVC inbound call center is situated in the city of Port St. Lucie and is a major employer. Numerous local residents work for the PGA or also referred to as Professional Golf Association, that has a facility within Port St. Lucie. Besides medical care, the major sectors for employment are construction, accommodation and food services, insurance and finance as well as government. Walmart and Publix Supermarkets are two of the main retail employers.

In the county, there are the head offices of Harbor Federal Savings Bank and Riverside National Bank. The county has numerous industrial parks and an emerging Life Science Cluster.
