The city boasts a population of more than 62,000 residents and is considered part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The Hamilton City School District is considered the best urban school district in the state of Ohio. Janet Baker, the district superintendent, has been named Ohio's superintendent of the year.

The city of Hamilton was historically an industrial township and still has numerous high-tech manufacturing facilities. Now the city is being revitalized through its support of the arts. It has been declared the 'City of Sculpture,' due to the wide variety of sculptures within the downtown area and in Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park.

In the year 1794, the area currently called Hamilton was known as Fairfield. Fort Hamilton, an army post, was constructed there. The settlement was incorporated as Hamilton during 1810, but lost its status five years afterward because it failed to hold elections. In 1827 the community was reincorporated and during the year 1857 it became a city. German immigrants were attracted to Hamilton and influenced its culture, particularly its food and architecture. Paper production and iron works were two main industries which boomed within the city of Hamilton from the early to mid-20th century.

A lot of the city was damaged in 1913 in the Great Dayton Flood. During the 1920's Hamilton became known as "Little Chicago" due to the numerous gangsters from Chicago who purchased homes in Hamilton. During WWII, Hamilton factories manufactured supplies for the war. However, military employees were forbidden to enter Hamilton on account of the numerous prostitution and gambling establishments which had taken root there.

Today Hamilton residents and visitors benefit from the city's many parks. Outdoor activities happen in Joyce Park, Miami Woods, Sanders Park, Milkin Woods and Crawford Woods. Individuals could normally be seen walking and bicycling on the picturesque paved paths along the Great Miami River banks. There are numerous excellent golf courses within the area. The local ice rink is busy during wintertime with skating and hockey.

The residents of Hamilton often travel to nearby Cincinnati for cultural and sporting events. The Beach Waterpark and the Kings Island amusement and recreational center are also popular recreation areas located in Hamilton. There is also a forest park located within Campbell Gard on the Great Miami River.
