Winston-Salem City serves as the seat of Forsyth County. The city of Winston-Salem is located 100 miles west of Raleigh, the state capital, and about 80 miles northeast of Charlotte. Winston-Salem is serviced by U.S. Routes 421 and 52, State Highway 8 and Interstate I-40.

Salem the town was first established during the year 1766, when it initially served as a congregational location for the Moravian church. Entrepreneurial activity and trading grew quickly as the town grew into a major economic hub. The adjacent Winston town was established in 1849 and named in tribute to a local Revolutionary War hero, Joseph Winston. Both Salem and Winston became famous centers within the newly created Forsyth County, with burgeoning ventures within the textile, tobacco and furniture markets. By the late 1850s, the two towns were connected to form Winston-Salem. Amongst the world's biggest tobacco companies, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, opened in Winston-Salem City during 1874. Since that time, the Reynolds family has played a significant part in the development of the city. In the early part of the 20th century, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts started its first store in Winston-Salem City and Piedmont Airlines established headquarters there.

Medical research is now a major industry in Winston-Salem City. The city's largest business is Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Other company head offices located in the city comprise TW Garner Food Company, Branch Banking and Trust Company, Hanes Brands Inc., Reynolda Manufacturing Solutions, Southern Community Bank, ISP Sports and Lowes Foods Stores. The city of Winston-Salem is part of the Piedmont Triad Research Park where numerous information technology and biomedical research and development facilities are situated. Finance and banking are significant to economy of the city as well.

Winston-Salem City has several post-secondary institutions, including Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University and Salem College.

The city of Winston-Salem is famous for establishing the first local arts council in the nation in the year 1949. Thus, and due to the number of art-related attractions, it is called "City of the Arts." The city of Winston-Salem is home to Twin City Stage, Winston-Salem Theater Alliance, the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Piedmont Opera Theater, the Stevens Center for the Performing Arts, the Sawtooth Center for Visual Arts and University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Art lovers could visit various galleries within the art district of the city at Sixth and Trade streets. Each year, many tourists visit for the many outstanding film and performance festivals, including the heavy rebel Weekender Music Festival, the national Black Theater Festival, the Reynolda Film festival, the RiverRun International Film Festival and the Revolve Film and Music festival. The city's music scene is enlivened by the presence of Carolina Music Ways, a grassroots arts organization and its diverse music traditions.
