The township site belonged to homesteader Erik Ramstad, who became amongst the leaders of Minot City and was named to honor Henry D. Minot, a railroad investor. Minot was incorporated as a city during the year 1887.

Located just 21 km north of the city is the Minot Air Force Base that provides a lot of jobs for city residents. On average though, Minot households earn less than the national median household income. A significant minority of the city residents must have at least two jobs to make ends meet.
