The name was chosen from the river running through the area. Flint established itself as a lumber center during the latter half of the 19th century. The city of Flint soon became called "Vehicle City," since it became the globe's largest carriage-making center. The city of Flint was in the forefront of the new auto business when horse-drawn carriages gave way to the arrival of cars.

During 1908, General Motors Corporation was founded in the city by William C. Durant. The manufacturing and motor vehicle assembly rapidly grew into a major industry. Flint has remained closely tied to the auto industry during the 20th century. The city of Flint has ridden the wave of the industry's times of prosperity and hardships that have occurred.
