It is located within both DuPage and Will Counties, with around two thirds of Napervillians residing within DuPage County, and another third within Will County. The city of Naperville is the 5th largest city in the state of Illinois. After it was inhabited in the year 1831, the community was named for Captain Joseph Naper. Naperville did not officially become a city until the year 1890. Employment provided by such companies as Nalco, Alcatel-Lucent, Nicor and Edward Hospital helped to build the population of Naperville near the end of the 20th century. The city of Naperville is home to the headquarters of Tellabs, OfficeMax and Dukane Precast, and ConAgra's Gocery's division branch office. Kraft Foods operates its Triscuit products plant there. A main concrete manufacturing plant is situated in the city of Naperville. Amoco and Argonne National Laboratory, a research facility owned by Fermilab are situated within the area. The city of Naperville has many automobile dealerships. Naperville City boasts a huge, $1.5 million, public-private automobile test track.

Situated within Naperville are several great shopping locations: Springbrook Prairie Pavillion, downtown Naperville, Freedom Commons and the Route 59 and Ogden Avenue corridors.

Naperville has a busy calendar of events. A popular event is the yearly Ribfest, an outdoor food fest which kicks off prior to Independence Day. Held Labor Day weekend is the Last Fling carnival. Summer concerts every week are held in the city's Central Park. Naperville also hosts traditional festivities on Saint Patrick's Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day.
