The Carnegie Museum of Art boasts a remarkable collection of art, featuring masterpieces by Monet, van Gogh and other important artists. Also located there is the Heinz Architectural Center. The city of Pittsburgh was the home of famed artist Andy Warhol, whose works are showcased in the Warhol Museum. Frank Lloyd Wright's seminal Fallingwater home is open for tours in nearby Mill Run.

The area has moved passed its roots as a major steel producer and heavy manufacturing to include substantial professional and business opportunities into its more diversified economy. Ten Fortune 1000 companies are have their head offices here. Well-known companies comprise H.J. Heinz, Mellon Financial and Dick's Sporting Goods. United States Steel is the biggest company with head office within the area.

The cities major industries comprise biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, financial services, healthcare, medicine, high technology and retail.

There are various parks and recreational areas within the city. The Raccoon State Park is a large city park featuring fishing, boating and water sports on Racoon Lake, as well as hiking, horseback riding, cycling and cross-country skiing. Point State Park, located at the actual point of convergence of the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers, is referred to simply as "the Point." Excellent downhill skiing opportunities are available close by within Seven Springs, Hidden Valley and Blue Knob. Located in the Laurel Mountains at an altitude of almost 3000 feet, Seven Springs is Pennsylvania's biggest ski area comprising 17 slopes.

There are also a variety of medical, cultural and educational institutions located outside the city's downtown core, like Carnegie Museum and Library, the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.
