Fort Bragg is a major U.S. Army installation located around 12 miles northwest of Fayetteville City. Thousands of elite paratroopers frequently deploy from there on missions all-around the world. The Fayetteville area was established in 1739 by Scottish immigrants. Two early settlements, Cross Creek and Campbellton, converged during 1783 to create Fayetteville. It was named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, a Revolutionary War hero. Previously the capital of North Carolina state (1789-1793), Fayetteville lost out to the city of Raleigh in its efforts to become the permanent state capital. The city of Fayetteville endured setbacks twice all through its history, once in 1831 the time The Great Fire destroyed much of the city, including the original State House. Then again, in the Civil War, Fayetteville City was destroyed by General Sherman's Union troops when they burned the Confederate arsenal there. In spite of these calamities a lot of buildings have been preserved within the historic districts of Fayetteville.
Fort Bragg hires hundreds of thousands of people, with an impact of this United States Army installation's economic activity in the many billions every year. The city's financial system is also heavily dependent on manufacturing. There are businesses which make tools, tires and automotive products.
