The city of Norman was founded during the 1889 Oklahoma Land Rush and was incorporated during the year 1891. Norman is home to the largest university in the state of Oklahoma, encouraging the development of technological and scientific research businesses within the city of Norman. The University of Oklahoma has a student population of approximately 30,000, and a workforce of practically 11,000. The research programs of the campus contributed more than $277 million to the economy during 2009.

The central Oklahoma area became part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase during 1803. The U.S. Government moved the Creek Nation within the area currently known as Norman in the years 1832 to 1833. Creek Nation was among five Native American tribes that the United States officially recognized via treaty. Prior to the American Civil War the United States government started relocating the tribes to Oklahoma.

The National Weather Center location is within the city of Norman in addition to some climate-and-weather-related organizations. The NWC is part of a collaborative effort between the national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of Oklahoma. Norman is a prime site for a planned National Weather Museum. The public and academic weather research activities in Norman have drawn several private meteorological companies, like for example Vieux and Associates, Inc., Weathernews Americas, Inc., Weather Decision Technologies, WeatherBank, Inc. and Computational Geosciences, Inc.

Norman is also home to several other public and private scientific ventures. The renewable energy sector comprises the Oklahoma Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Renewable Energy Council. Bergey Windpower supplies small wind turbines and SouthWest NanoTechnologies makes carbon nanotubes.

Other institutions and agencies contributing to the local economy comprise the Norman Regional Health System, Norman Public Schools and Griffin Memorial Hospital. Major businesses include Hitachi, AT&T, Astellas Pharma Technologies, Albon Engineering, Xyant Technology, RiskMetrics Group, Sysco Corporation, Office Max National Sales Center and SITEL.
