The city of Newport News is amongst Virginia's largest cities. It is included within the Newport News - Norfolk - Virginia Beach metropolitan area.
The airport of the city is the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Norfolk International Airport is nearby in the city of Norfolk.
The city of Newport News was a small rural community for a long time after it was settled during the year 1621. Initially the township was known as "Newportes Newes." It is not sure where the name originated from. The area was the site of the Peninsula Campaign in the year 1862 during the Civil War. During the 1890s, Newport News became a railroad town when the eastern terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Railway located here. The city was incorporated during the year 1896, and in 1958, the nearby city of Warwick was consolidated together with the city of Newport News.
Businesses within Newport News include military, shipbuilding and aerospace. Military bases are located within the area, supplied by many defensive industry suppliers within the city. Numerous local residents are working at these businesses, and within the shipyard and within different harbor-related vocations. Newport News Shipbuilding is owned by Huntington Ingalls Industries. Coal piers are supplied by CSX Transportation, a Fortune 500 railroad company, the modern successor to C&O. The James River Bridge and Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel are part of the Hampton Roads Beltway.
The maritime business plays a major role in the city of Newport News. Heavy-lift cranes and container cranes could be seen operating at the busy Newport News Marine Terminal, at the end of the CSX railroad tracks. The Marine Terminal has 0.57 km2 of warehouses.
Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipbuilding is the city's biggest employer, employing over 15,000 people. The second biggest employer is Fort Eustis, that employs over 10,000. The 3rd biggest employer is Newport News School System, with roughly 5000 employees.
The strong cultural sector of the city consists of the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, which has a diverse art collection and hosts regular exhibitions. Popular with kids, the Hands On For Kids gallery is an interactive and fun place for art-making. Kids also like seeing the African mandrill, Siberian tiger and black leopard at the Peninsula S.P.C.A. Exotic Sanctuary. The Petting Zoo has a peacock, chickens, goats and deer. The U.S. Army Transportation Museum has dioramas and models of historic transportation machinery, as well as a full-size collection. The outdoors could be enjoyed in any of the city's 30 public parks.
