 Seats for Forklifts Honolulu - The most densely inhabited city as well as the capital city of the state of Hawaii is the city of Honolulu. It is the most southern major city within the USA. The name "Honolulu" refers to an urban area located on the southeastern shore on the island of Oahu. In the Hawaiian language, the word Honolulu translates to "place of shelter" or "sheltered bay." Since 1845, the city has been the Hawaiian Islands' capital. In the attack of the Japanese on Pearl Harbor, near the city on December 7, the year 1941, the city gained historical recognition.
The county and city government have been consolidated as the County and City of Honolulu. This government encompasses the whole island. At the time of the 2000 Census, the population of the urban part of the city of Honolulu, which is considered to be the census-designated place by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistical purposes, was roughly 377,300. Honolulu is a major financial center of the Pacific Ocean islands. During the 2010 Census, the population of the county and the city was 953,207. Relative to state population, the city of Honolulu is the most heavily populated state capital.
The first settlements of Honolulu appear to be Polynesian migrants who have been shown to be the original inhabitants of the island through numerous artifacts and accounts of oral histories. These records show that as early as the 11th century, there was a settlement where the city of Honolulu is now situated. During 1804, in the Battle of Nu'uanu at Nu'uanu Pali, after Kamehameha I conquered Oahu; he moved his royal court from the Island of Hawaii to Waiki-ki. In the year 1809, his court relocated to what is presently considered to be downtown Honolulu. In 1812, the capital was moved back to Kailua-Kona.
Honolulu is the cultural center of Hawaii State and is where lots of landmarks and museums have been erected to be able to celebrate the rich history of the island. Situated downtown are the Lolani Palace and the King Kamehameha statue, which honor the Hawaiian Kingdom's royalty. The Polynesian Cultural Center near Brigham Young University, located outside of the city offers an outdoor representation of villages from New Zealand, the state of Hawaii, Fiji, and Tahiti as well as other Pacific cultures. There are Hula dancing, native dancers and interactive demonstrations performed. Two events are held each and every year during the months of June and July.
One more popular place to visit while in Honolulu City is the Bishop Museum, situated just north of downtown. It offers an insight into the rich history with live performances, costumes, canoes and documents.
The city's economy is heavily dependent upon the industries of defense contracting, tourism and the military, research and development and manufacturing. Tourism normally brings Honolulu approximately 10 billion dollars each and every year. Other major economic factors are provided by agriculture and aqua-culture. The Marine Base Kaneohe, the Schofield Barracks and the Pearl Harbor naval Shipyard are other factors which contribute to the economy.
There are some diversifying economical sectors emerging within the city of Honolulu such as information and communication technologies, alternative energy, astronomy and space sciences, defense-dual use technologies, marine sciences and science-biotech. The Kapolei area also houses among the largest industrial parks in Hawaii. There are a variety of big shipping firms which serve the port, and the Honolulu Harbor has a well-known Foreign Trade Zone.
