The town was first built in the conventional pattern of a Spanish community: a church, houses and government buildings all surrounded a central plaza.

The University of St. Francis College of Nursing, Trinity Southwest University and the National American University as well as Allied Health Department of Physician Assistant Studies are all situated here as well.
