The city gets its name from the Mesquite Creek that flows through the city. It is situated near the crossroads of Interstate Highways I-30 and I-635 on U.S. Route 80. Balch Springs lies towards the south and Garland City is located to the north. The city of Mesquite is known as the "Rodeo Capital of Texas" as it hosts the Mesquite Championship Rodeo annually.

In the year 1873, the Texas and Pacific Railway was established. The city of Mesquite was incorporated immediately after during 1887. The city of Mesquite began to expand little by little with cotton being its primary trade. In a twenty year span, from the years 1950 to 1970, the population rapidly increased from less than 20,000 individuals to 50,000 residents. The cities expansion was due mainly in part to the growth of the neighboring Dallas City. To be able to help preserve the city's culture and heritage, the city of Mesquite established the Mesquite Historical Commission in the 1980's. The name has ever since been changed to the Historic Mesquite, Inc., and is presently working on numerous projects like a historical park.

mesquite was founded on the 22nd of May, the year 1873, along the Texas & Pacific rail lines just outside of Dallas, by an engineer of the Texas & Pacific Railway. Mesquite prospered, and its population rose from 1,696 during the year 1950 to approximately 55,131 in 1970.
