It has been said to translate to "pretty prairie," by utilizing the words "Hili" for pretty and "Haiyakpo" for prairie. The word itself is believed to be of Seminole origin, translating to "Upland Prairie."

The city of Hialeah is situated upon a huge prairie, in between the Biscayne bay and the Everglades. It is a city in the Miami-Dade County within Florida. The population of the city of Hialeah was approximately 226,400 according to the 2000 census. During the year 2009, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the city's population had become reduced to 218,896. It is a main city of South Florida and Greater Miami and was the 6th biggest city in the state of Florida at that time. The Seminole interpretation of the name Hialeah translates to "High Prairie", evoking pictures of beautiful grassy plains which the natives utilized to dock their canoes after coming in from the everglades. During the year 1921, Pioneer aviator Glen Curtiss and Missouri cattleman James H. Bright thought that the region contained great potential.

Hialeah is also home to some popular homegrown companies such as Navarro and Sedano's.

These stores actively and successfully compete alongside the national franchises, name brand retailers and outfitters. National businesses have changed their conventional business plan to be able to fit into the demands of the local economy so as to remain competitive.
