South Bend, Indiana gets its name because its location along the southernmost bend of the St. Joseph River. The city serves as the county seat for St. Joseph County. The population of South Bend City is approximately 101,168 while the population of its Metropolitan Statistical Area is roughly 316,663. The Combined Statistical Area population is 544,582. The city is considered Michiana Region's economical center and is the state's 4th largest city. Notre Dame, Indiana is situated just to the of South Bend and hosts the University of Notre Dame.
South Bend was incorporated as a city in the year 1865 and ever since then has developed a highly industrialized economy because of the pioneering businesses, like the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company. During the 19th century, the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company was the biggest manufacturer of wagons and was among the only businesses that were able to successful transition to manufacturing cars from making wagons. They had a big role on the economy of the city until they were shut down in 1963. Other significant businesses that played a part on the growth of South Bend consist of the Birdsell Manufacturing Company, Oliver Corporation, the Bendix Corporation, the Singer Sewing Machine Company, the South Bend Toy Company and Honeywell.
The economy in South Bend remains diverse, consisting of wholesale and retail trade, education, government and healthcarre. The biggest employer within the city of South Bend is the Notre Dame University. As such, education has a major impact on South Bend's economy. Local businesses have partnered along with the university to further research and development on some projects. The 2nd biggest employer in South Bend is the Memorial Health System. Some other medical related companies are situated within the city.
One more industry which plays a large part within the economy is manufacturing. Transportation equipment, non-electrical machinery, plastic products and rubber products are only some of the manufacturing sectors. AM General, the corporation that makes Hummer military and special purpose vehicles, has its head office within the city. It is amongst the largest employers within South Bend.
Very Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C and six Catholic brothers founded the University of Notre Dame in 1842. Since then, the university has become an essential part of the city's economy and culture.
Over 114 years of automotive history is housed at the Studebaker National Museum. The collection features all of the Studebaker products, varying from the family`s early Conestoga Wagon all the way to the last automobile that the company produced. In the year 1922, the Morris Performing Arts Center was opened. It has recently been renovated and is presently home to the Broadway Theatre League as well as the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. The South Bend Regional Museum of Art is situated downtown in Century Center. It was founded in the year 1996 and is home to over 850 pieces of art work from an assortment of regional artists.
