At first the economy within Santa Ana was dominated by agricultural trades. Then again, aerospace trades (notably Huges and Northrop) became prominent soon after the end of WWII. As soon as the University of California was built in Irvine in the mid 60's, science based industries developed and prospered. Santa Ana is considered the top high-tech area in Southern California. Among the "Fast Fifty" companies, Santa Ana has 21 of them established within the city limits.

One of the reasons why Santa Ana's economy is very strong is that the city encourages small companies. Almost 1/4 of these small companies are minority owned. Due to the cities strong economic base, it could outperform lots of other cities in California during hard economic times.
