Prior to the European arrival, Native American tribes have inhabited the region for many many years surrounding Central Arkansas. There are many archaeological artifacts found in the area which supports these findings. Amongst the original inhabitants in the region consisted of Bluff Dwellers, the different Mississippian culture civilizations who built numerous earthwork mounds that were recorded by Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto's expedition during 1541. Furthermore, the Folsom people likewise have proof of inhabiting the region. Various historical tribes from the area include the Cherokee, Osage, Caddo, Choctaw and the Quapaw.
