Early travelers and river traffic used the "little rock" as a landmark and this eventually turned into a well recognized river crossing. La Petit Roche was named by French trader and explorer Jean-Baptiste Benard de la Harpe. This area marked the transition from the Ouachita Mountain foothills to the flat Mississippi Delta region.
Prior to the European arrival, Native American tribes have inhabited the region for many many years surrounding Central Arkansas. There are many archaeological artifacts found in the area which supports these findings.
