Initially, the area which Killeen City currently occupies was a farming community called Palo Alto. Palo Alto had been around ever since the year 1872. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway acquired 360 acres of land in the year 1881, including the land where Palo Alto was situated. They constructed a 70-block town on the land. The town was named after the assistant general manager of railroad, Frank P. Killeen. The city of Killeen prospered, and by the following year a salon, railroad depot, a school and some stores had been developed. Several people from nearby communities relocated to the city and by the year 1884 the population had risen to approximately 350 individuals. By this time, the city of Killeen had five general stores, two gristmills, two saloons, two cotton gins, a blacksmith shop a hotel and a lumberyard.
