The city's population is 245,314, making St. Petersburg the 4th largest city within Florida State. The city of St. Petersburg is located within the County of Pinellas, for which Clearwater serves the county seat. However, county services are available through county offices in St. Petersburg. There are 2.7 million people within the Metropolitan Statistical Area.
John C. Williams and Peter Demens co-founded the city. Williams bought the land in the year 1876, and Demens helped bring the railroad there in 1888. St. Petersburg became a city officially during 1892, with a population of 300 inhabitants.
Situated on Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg enjoys a tropical weather condition, allowing the city to pack the year with several outdoor events. More than 1,000 thousand outdoor festivals are held here on a yearly basis, most taking place along the preserved downtown waterfront area. Activities comprise the Cajun/Zydeco Crawfish Festival, American Stage in the Park, the Art Arbor Nature Crafts Festival, Earth Day's Green Thumb Festival, and plenty more. The music and art is virtually nonstop as the city's streets and parks fill with people. The city is also the location of an Indycar series car race, the Honda grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
The downtown Central Business District within the city of St. Petersburg has lots of high rise buildings such as the Bank of America Tower. Restaurants can be found on Central Avenue and the nearby Beach Drive. Several bars, lounges and clubs can be found around and along Central Avenue with entertainment to suit every taste. The State Theatre and Jannus Landing are two well-known concert venues. The St. Petersburg Times newspaper has its head office within the Central Business District.
The Central Business District has many fine galleries and theaters. The Mahaffey Theater complex has a glass-enclosed atrium overlooking St. Petersburg's waterfront. The Coliseum, the multi-use facility, has the finest ballroom within the south. There are a number of well-known art collections: Chihuly Collection presented by the Morean Arts Center, Salvador Dali Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, the Florida International Museum, and the Holocaust Museum. Dozens of other galleries and cultural venues can be found downtown and on the perimeter.
