Based on the last census, the population is 137,436. Situated on the the Virginia Peninsula's southeastern end, Hampton is among the 7 main cities which make up the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.

Hampton is situated on the Hampton Roads Beltway and is home to the HRBT or also called the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel located on Interstate 64. This bridge-tunnel serves as the gateway to Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean from the eastern United States and its tributary rivers. It was first opened during the year 1957 and was the world's very first bride-tunnel. This particular gateway is the largest ice-free harbor in the United States. The HRBT was expanded in the 1970s. Even these days, this particular facility is the deepest and the busiest in Virginia.

The city of Hampton is considered amongst the earliest settlements within the US, because it could trace its earliest origins back to the early 1600s. The town was a quiet trading post prior to the Civil War. In 1861, the area was part of the conflict, when the Confederate army burned the city to the ground, attempting to stop the take over of the town by the Union troops. Out of the remains left after that, former slaves who were under a degree of Union protection, built the Grand Contraband Camp. This camp was the first self-contained African American community within the nation.

During 1952, Hampton received city status following a municipal consolidation. This consolidation resulted in the City of Hampton incorporating the boundaries of a region formerly called Elizabeth City County.

Hampton is a city with lots of activities to both see and do. There are a lot of cultural, recreational and historical attractions. Like for example, The Virginia Air & Space Center is officially the visitor center for NASA's Langley Research Center. Tourists could truly enjoy a virtual reality video on the pioneers of flying in a state-of-the-art set up. They could likewise see the Apollo 12 Command Capsule that journeyed to the moon.

The Hampton University Museum is situated on among the oldest African-American universities within the US. Originally, the University was the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. Their goal was to educate freed black men and women and teach them skills and trades after the Civil War ended. Furthermore, the location is the place where the Emancipation Proclamation was read by Lincoln and is called Emancipation Oak.

Situated within historic downtown, the Hampton History Museum provides the history of the city. There are costumed interpreters available to re-enact the significance and the context of many of the exhibits. A different popular tourist attraction is the Casemate Museum located at Fort Monroe. This is the biggest stone fort ever to be built in the United States. The Museum chronicles the role of the Fort during the Civil War and is among the major attractions. It also contains the cell that imprisoned Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President.

The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center is one more downtown place, that was constructed in the year 1925. It serves as the cities public library for over 60 years. The building has undergone major restoration and renovation. It now presents changing exhibitions of the best local, regional and national artists.
