The city of Dayton sits in the Miami Valley region of Ohio, north of Cincinnati. The Dayton-Springfield-Greenville Combined Statistical Area is the 43rd biggest combined statistical area in the US with a population of 1,072,891 (2010 census).
The city claims to be the birthplace of aviation because Dayton was the home to Orville and Wilbur Wright, who were the inventors of powered flight. The city of Dayton has numerous aerospace, industrial and research businesses that have been able to produce many technical innovations. Dayton is occasionally referred to as the "Gem City," a moniker derived from a 1845 newspaper article that noted the Dayton City's wealth, refinement and enterprise. Dayton's surrounding metropolitan area includes Centerville, Beavercreek, Kettering, Vandalia and Trotwwod. Dayton City is still a "gem", with its several shops, restaurants, sports facilities, spacious parks, lively arts community, sites of historical value and a thriving downtown district.
Dayton's thriving cultural scene comprises dance, theater, visual arts and music. The city has built a reputation as a destination for entertainment and culture due to groups like the Dayton Art Institute and the Dayton Ballet. The city of Dayton boasts several arts centers like the Benjamin and Marina Schuster Performing Arts Center, the Brookville Community Theater, the Dayton Cultural Center and the Dayton Art Institute. CITYFOLK is a local group that produces ethnic and traditional dance and music events. Culture Works is a development group which provides support through community funding to the arts in Dayton.
Dayton's largest employer is the research and development department of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which hires a large number of civilians. Due to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the city of Dayton has been able to draw amongst the country's highest concentrations of aerospace/high-technology companies. A large number of engineers, scientists, specialists and technicians find work at these businesses. The U.S. Defense Department Joint Logistics Systems Center hires many private sector workers so as to manage the installation of computer systems. Ohio State is working so as to make Dayton a leading center for UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) research and manufacturing.
The financial system of Dayton has begun to diversify lately to presently consist of education, healthcare, legal and insurance. The Greater Dayton area hospitals contribute significantly to the local economy and are a major business within the region. The region's Miami Valley Research Park, the site of government and corporate research firms, is one more important source of jobs.
