The growing bio-technology sector gets its boost mainly from Yale Medical School, pharmaceutical businesses and local healthcare.

Around 9% of the economy is manufacturing based, manufacturing everything from airplane parts to watches. Within Connecticut State, the city of New Haven is the biggest wholesale distribution center. New Haven's major employment sectors are health services and education; trade, transportation and utilities; business and professional services; government; manufacturing; leisure and hospitality; and finance.

Greater New Haven is home to three Fortune 1000 companies: the headquarters of The Knights of Columbus are within the city of New Haven, the electrical equipment producer Hubbell is based within Orange, and Amphenol is based within Wallingford.
