It sits on the Naugatuck River within the heart of New Haven County, Connecticut. The population is estimated to be 110 366, making it New England's 9th largest city, the 5th biggest within Connecticut, and the County's 2nd largest.
The first settlement occurred in the year 1674 in a region called Town Plot. This particular area was soon vacated just after the 1675 King Philip's War. The plot was later returned during the year 1677, in a region that was just slightly west of the original settlement. Both of these historic sites are marked. At first the city was referred to as "Mattatock" after "Matetacoke", an Algonquin word, which translates to "place without trees". When the city was admitted to the Connecticut colony on the 15th of May, the year 1686, it was known as Waterbury. It was named Waterbury after all of the streams that run into the Naugatuck River. At that time, the city consisted of some regions which will eventually become their own towns, like for instance Watertown, Plymouth, Wolcott, Prospect, Naugatuck, Thomaston, and Middlebury.
The city earned its nickname "Brass City" because of its leading role within the manufacturing of brassware. Waterbury is famous for its gorgeous watches and clocks. The cities motto, Written in marble above the entrance of city hall is "Quid Aere Perennius". Translated, "Quid Aere Perennius" means "What Is More Lasting Than Brass?" Waterbury is famous for its vibrant art, advanced technology and magnificent historic architecture.

The city has on the other hand begun to diversify its economy with the emergence of warehouse and distribution, chemical research, banking and retail sectors.
