The University of Georgia is within this college township and really responsible for the initial growth of Athens. During nineteen ninety one, after a successful vote the year before, the original city abandoned its charter and decided to form a unified government together with neighboring Clarke County. The new region was referred to collectively as Athens-Clarke County. According to the 2010 Census, the consolidated city county had a total population of approximately 115,452. This combined population comprised all of Athens-Clarke County less a portion of Bogart and Winterville.

Athens, Georgia was first a trading settlement set up along the banks of Oconee River. The area went by the name Cedar Shoals during the latter part of the 1700s. On the 27th of January, 1785, the Georgia General Assembly chartered the University of Georgia as the first chartered state-supported university. Abraham Baldwin drafted the charter which existed solely on paper for 16 years.

During the summer of 1801, a delegation of 5 men: John Milledge, Hugh Lawson, Baldwin, John Twiggs and George Walton traveled to was referred to as Jackson County to pick a location for the future university and likewise secure a contract for its construction. Unanimously, the delegation agreed on the location of the property on the hill above Cedar Shoals and the Oconee River. On July 25, the year 1801, Daniel Easley sold 633 acres to Milledge and then donated it to the university. The land was named Athens to honor the Greek city which was the center of culture and learning during ancient times.

The Athens-Clarke County is spread out over roughly 125 square miles, which is the smallest area for any of the one hundred fifty nine counties within the state of Georgia. One of the highest points in Athens is designated by City Hall within the downtown core. It is located around 761 feet above sea level. Athens-Clarke County was the 25th county established within the state. It is about sixty five miles northeast of the city of Atlanta.

There is a diverse economy in the area that consists of numerous sectors such as healthcare, poultry processing, timber, education and tourism. Other major factors for the economy include the manufacturing of objects such as textiles, electrical parts, transportation equipment, apparel, and industrial machinery. Also, Athens is considered to be the key center for trade in the Northeast Georgia area.
