In 1702, the city of Mobile was established and was later incorporated as a city during the year 1819. Mobile came under several changes of rule during the intervening years. At first, the establishment ruled as French Louisiana's capital until the British assumed control in the year 1763. In the American Revolution, the Spanish seized Mobile, and in the war of the year 1812, the United States took over. During the Civil War, Mobile was part of the Confederacy and survived a Union Naval forces blockade. For 50 years, Mobile's proximity near a large worldwide seaport increased its fortunes. The shipment of cotton was its major business. These days the local economy is dominated by the aerospace, chemical, petroleum and maritime industries. Tourism is also a major industry.

Many local people are working at Mobile Aerospace Engineering, the biggest private employer within the city of Mobile.
