Greater Grand Forks, also called The Grand Cities, consists of the City of Grand Forks and the twin city of East Grand Forks, in the State of Minnesota. The Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of almost 100,000.
The city of Grand Forks is situated on the banks of the Red River in the Red River Valley. This area is a low-lying area which is subject to some flooding. The most recent large scale flood in the year 1997, was among the most severe since the year 1826. The early French fur traders named the town Les Grandes Fourches. It was founded at the fork of the Red River and the Red Lake River by Alexander Griggs, a steamboat captain, and incorporated during the year 1881. Agriculture rapidly flourished within the fertile valley soil.
Nowadays, the city is dependent on various modern industries, such as defense, health care, manufacturing, food processing, higher education and scientific research. No single sector dominates the economy of Grand Forks. Altru Health System is the city's largest private employer. The University of North Dakota, in downtown Grand Forks, is a major center of higher education, the oldest such institution within the state, and the biggest employer within the metro area. A large percentage of Grand Forks area jobs are provided by state and federal government employers. West of Grand Forks is Grand Forks Air Force Base, that provides a huge number of jobs for both civilian workers and enlisted personnel. The City of Grand Forks is accessed by Grand Forks International Airport and Grand Forks Air Force Base.
In the city, there are significant manufacturing companies producing products such as aircrafts and wind turbines. J.R. Simplot Company is among the numerous food processing businesses within Grand Forks. The North Dakota Mill and Elevator is a state-owned flour mill and is the biggest in the nation. There are key call centers in Grand Forks. Businesses owned by the locals include Hugo's supermarkets, Alerus Financial and Home of Economy.
The City of Grand Forks boasts a lot of fine cultural and sports places, like the Ralph Engelstad Arena, Chester Fritz Auditorium and Alerus Center. The North Dakota Museum of Art is one of numerous art galleries.
