Bismarck is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, across from Mandan. The city of Bismarck serves as the county seat of Burleigh County. After the city of Fargo, the city of Bismarck is the 2nd largest city by population in the state of North Dakota. The cities of Bismarck and Mandan form the core of the Bismarck-Mandan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The metropolitan area population is just over 100,000.

The original inhabitants before settlement were the Mandan peoples. The town was established during 1872 at a place on the river called Missouri Crossing. The original name of the city of Bismarck was Edwinton, named after Edwin Ferry Johnson, the former engineer-in-chief for the Northern Pacific Railway. As part of an effort to attract investments from Germany, the Railway changed the city's name to Bismarck in 1873. The name was meant to honor the German chancellor, Otto von Bismarck. But it was the discovery of gold which caused Bismarck to boom. Gold was discovered in the Black Hills nearby in 1874, and the city of Bismarck became a freight-shipping hub at the station of the "Custer Route". Known as the capital of the Dakota Territory in the year 1883 and North Dakota's state capital during 1889, Bismarck became a center of government. Bismarck also played a prominent role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Bismarck is home to the North Dakota State Capitol building, a 19-story tower and the tallest building in the state. The government of the state is the city's largest employer, providing work for more than 4,000 people. The city is also a center for retail and health care, forming the economic center for much of south-central North Dakota and north-central South Dakota. Medcenter One Health Systems and St. Alexius Medical Center are Bismarck's biggest health care providers, employing over 4,000 people. Other major employers within Bismarck are Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Coventry Health Care, Midwest Motor Express and Bismarck Public Schools. The Federal Government of the United States also employs many in Bismarck. Bismarck is the home of Fortune 500 company MDU Resources Group.
