The city of Jackson derives its name from the former general and President of the US, Andrew Jackson. "City with Soul" is the slogan for Jackson, Mississippi. This study measured numerous factors such as housing rates and overall affordability, along with other things. Additionally, the city is ranked as the 23rd most dangerous city within the nation based on the 14th annual "City Crime Rankings: Crime in Metropolitan America."
It was way back in 1821 that the community was established. Called "LeFleur's Bluff," the area was selected to be the location of the town that would later become the state capital of Mississippi. In the year 1821, a legislative act authorized the location to become the permanent seat of government for Mississippi State. That same year it was decided to name the city Jackson, to honor Major General Andrew Jackson. Later on, this man will become the 7th President of the USA.
The community became incorporated as a city a year later. During the Civil War, the city of Jackson became a target of Union troops. Jackson was destroyed and burned numerous times under General William T. Sherman's command. The recovery of the area post war was quite slow. Jackson started to experience a sharp rise in population during the turn of the 20th century. It eventually became amongst the most dynamic growth areas in the Sunbelt.
In the 1930s industrial growth was spurred by the discovery of natural gas nearby. The city became a scene of racial unrest in the 60s and the 70s. This destructive behavior was epitomized by the slaying of civil rights activist and NAACP leader Medgar Evers in the year 1963, by a white supremacist. There have been lots of improvements during the following decades in the area of race relations. The members of the Jackson City Council unanimously voted during 2004 in honor of Medgar Evers by renaming the Jackson International Airport.
Jackson is a center in Mississippi State for such recreational activities as fine cuisine, cultural attractions and music. The Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center is among the best sites to visit. This particular building is situated really near the State Capitol building. It showcases artifacts, photos and art, celebrating the rich African American experience in the Deep South. The Museum is situated in the former Smith Robertson School, that originally opened in 1894. It was the first public school to be built in Jackson for African American student.
The Jackson Zoo is amongst the best landmarks within the city. It has operating since 1919 and proudly services hundreds of thousands of visitors each and every year. There are over 100 different species of animals on display and many of them are considered to be endangered. The Russell C. Davis Planetarium is another highlight within downtown Jackson. It offers the audience a chance to experience gorgeous space scenes as well as fantastic large scale film action and colorful laser image projection.
